Intentions Aren’t Enough

Daily Devotional : Intentions Aren’t Enough
Scripture Focus: 2 Samuel 6:6,7

Jesus Christ said, I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6) This seems simple to hear but is hard to live out. We like to think our good intentions count for something — that if our hearts are in the right place, God will understand. But, Scripture shows that good motives alone are not always enough for us to line up with God’s way.

Take Uzzah in 2 Samuel, chapter 6. The Ark of God was being carried, and when the oxen stumbled, Uzzah reached out to steady it. Seems harmless, even honorable, right? But God struck him down. Not because Uzzah was wicked, but because he acted outside of God’s command. His heart meant well, but his hands moved ahead of God’s way.

That story shakes me up a bit. It reminds us how easy it is to trust our feelings over God’s word. The devil loves that. He’d rather have us rely on what “feels right” than what “is right”. But our hearts, as Scripture says, are already corrupted by sin. So, no matter how sincere we are, something born out of a broken heart can’t produce the holiness God requires.

That’s why we need Jesus Christ. Our intentions can’t save us, only His blood does. He steps into the mess we can’t fix and makes a new way forward. In Isaiah 45:2, God promises, “I will go before you and make the rough places smooth; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.” That’s His voice saying, “Let Me lead. You follow.”

So don’t let good intentions become your excuse. Instead, keep your eyes on Jesus Christ. Follow His way, even when it cuts across what feels natural. That’s where the real joy begins — not the fleeting joy of “getting it right,” but the deep, lasting joy of salvation.

Reflection for Today

Are my intentions guided by the Word and the Spirit of Jesus Christ? Do my actions flow from His truth, and not my own reasoning? Do I find satisfaction in getting things right or in surrendering to Him and waiting upon Him?

Prayer

Oh, Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I come before the throne of Grace for your mercies. Help me to give priority to Your way above my own intentions. Let Your name alone be glorified through my life as I reflect Your character. Lord, I know my desires are not enough to please you. Grant me the grace to seek the way of Christ each day, and not to use my intentions as an excuse. I submit myself to You, like clay in the potter’s hand. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray, Amen.

Daily Takeaway

Even the best intentions can miss God’s heart when they come from our own understanding. The story of Uzzah reminds us that meaning well is not the same as walking in obedience. Jesus Christ calls us to follow His way, not just with good motives, but with surrendered steps.
